I've been collecting breaks for several
years, but my habit took a turn for the
worse in 1999 when I discovered that, eventually, more or less everything
will
turn up on eBay. I had heard about an album called The Gospel According
To Zeus
by Power Of Zeus (see "Power Of Zeus: the band"), and when a
copy came up on
eBay I bid for it. Sadly, the auction closed at around 2am on a Saturday
night,
and, somewhat the worse for drink, I ended up spending rather more than
I had
ever done for any other record ever in my life in acquiring it.
A few weeks later, and again under
the influence of alcohol, I found myself
looking around on the internet for information about the band. There wasn't
much out there. And it turned out that nobody had registered the
powerofzeus.com web domain. At the time, this seemed like an excellent
web
address to have, so I bought it. Once the hangover had worn off, I realised
that I had absolutely no use for this address whatsoever. So eventually
the
idea came together that I should start a club night and website named
after
Power Of Zeus and inspired by their excellent record.
The Windmill was the perfect venue
it's small, intimate, friendly and pretty
close to where I live. It also has its own PA system so could deal with
the
live aspect, which I always thought of as a vitally important part of
the club.
All I had to do was get my act together, book it with Seamus, the landlord,
and
tell people about it. This took approximately six months. (The arse/gear
part,
mainly.)
And so, here we are.
